The HM-1 die pairing is a rarity, however, and is the most challenging to collect for the date after only HM-9. Writing in the 2020 reference United States Classic Gold Coins of 1834-1839, Daryl J. Haynor estimates that only 20 examples of the 1836 HM-1 are extant in all grades. Struck from the perfect state of both the obverse and reverse dies, the offered coin is exceedingly rare.
