Gabriel Girard (1677-1748), also known as Abbe Girard, was a churchman and grammarian, elected in 1744 to the French Academy. French Synonyms is considered to be his main work. Girard is considered as "the first [to have] opened the eyes of the nation, the wealth that the language would acquire the only explanation synonyms that without a clear and precise difference overload the words in the 'depleting ideas'". The main objective of the work is to prove that the terms that are considered synonyms each still have a specific meaning. The volumes are set up alphabetically, and compare two, three, or four similar terms to show their specificity. This work offered an original and innovative language study at the time of publication.
