Description: Paradise Lost was first printed in 1667 and Paradise Regained in 1671. In the second half of the 18th Century, there were a number of 4-Vol sets of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained published, both pieces in 2 volumes each. This listing is for the first of the two volumes of "Paradise Regain'd.. ". It is fully titled and subtitled, "Paradise regain'd. : a poem, in four books. To which is added Samson agonistes: and poems upon several occasions. The author John Milton / A new edition. With notes of various authors, by Thomas Newton, D.D. now Lord Bishop of Bristol". It's published is listed as, "London : Printed for J. Beecroft, W. Strahan, J. and F. Rivington, Hawes, Clarke and Collins, R. Horsfield, W. Johnston, B. White, T. Caslon, S. Crowder, T. Longman, B. Law, C. Corbett, Z. Stuart, T. Cadell, T. Lowndes, T. Davies, J. Robson, W. Nicol, W. Flexney, G. Robinson, J. Knox, and W. Otridge, MDCCLXXIII." The book has been professionally refurbished, with the main work being reinforcement of the attachment of the front and rear boards with the use of binding paper, and with some staining, treatment and sealing of the original FULL LEATHER BOARDS. The use of the binding paper at the endpapers can be seen in the listing photo. Boards have moderate to heavy corner wear, light edge wear, wear on the spine which had left it largely cracked and the gilt titling and decoration missing. The last names of John Milton and Thomas Newton can be seen on the spine. It was worth refurbishing because the interior is in VERY GOOD CONDITION. Original (presumably) marble endpapers clean, pages without foxing, two very nice interior engravings (shown in listing photo), 335 clean and solidly bound pages. There is a note by a previous owner, identifying the book to be a gift of "Rev'd Wm Kirby". The owner inked her first initial and last name on the previous endpaper as well (not shown in the listing photo). 335 clean and solidly bound pages, no further marks. This book does include the complete "Paradise Regain'd" as well as the poem, Samson Agonistes. The next volume includes other poems including Comus. Unfortunately lacking the other 3 volumes that were part of the 4 volume set, still a SPECIAL COPY OF THE COMPLETE PARADISE REGAINED BYJOHN MILTON, INCLUDING 2 BEAUTIFUL ENGRAVINGS! B110
