#11A 3 Cents 1851-57 Mis-struck British Transit Marking “KIN..A 1854” + Cover

Description: Unique Mis-Struck Foreign Marking on #11A: 3 Cents 1851-57 stamp, Plate 1L, late use, cancelled by a black British Transit Marking, “KIN……. A 1854” Also includes a stampless cover which illustrates a typical use of this British Transit Marking (St. Andrews) from the era. All on a Scott National display page. The Research: The large red circular datestamp (PAID MAR 11 F 1852 C) In the upper right corner is a date stamp of Edinburgh through which the letter traveled to Liverpool. It indicated the letter was fully paid. The letter has been paid one shilling ($.24) in Saint Andrews (manuscript one shilling “1/-“ - the single treaty rate) along with a blue transit marking “ST. ANDREWS MR 1852” (similar to that stuck on our 3 Cent 1851-57). Liverpool stamped the red “5 CENTS” and “PAID” marking to show the credit to the U.S. Since a British mail steamer was to carry the letter across the Atlantic, the U.S. was entitled to only five cents. The steamship that carried the letter to New York City was the ‘Europa’. Unfortunately, the NYC clerk did not apply a circular datestamp, which would have showed the arrival date (Mar. 25) and that the letter was paid $.24. The clerk did however strike the red “PAID” at the top. The partial red “2” (above the ‘…phia’ of ‘Philadelphia’) may have been part of an attempt to show that the $.24 was paid, a requirement under the convention. The two backstamps are: 1) a blue “LIVERPOOL MR 12 1852 A” and 2) a black thimble oval “L MR 12 A”. Addressed to “Charles Willing, Esq., No. 9 Portico Square, Philadelphia” and at lower left “By Mail Steamer”, with no contents.
